Gospel legend Bill Gaither has been performing for more than 50 years, gaining an international following and numerous honors along the way. Joined by the dynamic Gaither Vocal Band, many of Gaither's original songs are now standards of Christian music, including He Touched Me (covered by Elvis Presley in his 1972 gospel album of the same name), There's Something About That Name and Because He Lives.
Gaither has a longstanding reputation as a passionate performer of both traditional gospel music and his own original, contemporary Christian songs.
Bill Gaither is from Alexandria, Ind. He formed his first group, the Bill Gaither Trio, while still in college. By the '60s, he was dedicating himself full time to his music career. Together with his wife, Gloria, he's written several hundred songs, many of them covered by Christian, country and pop artists.
Gaither maintains a steady touring schedule with the Gaither Vocal Band, and mentors many young performers. Additionally, he's helping to popularize veteran gospel and traditional musicians in his genre. He's also the founder of the Gaither Music Company, which produces recordings and video.
In the 1990s, Gaither began producing the Gaither Homecoming to recognize artists of Southern gospel music. The Homecoming series films legendary gospel acts together with those just starting out, and the groups perform music and swap stories together. The popular video series and ensuing concert tours helped bring renewed vigor to the entire Southern gospel genre.
In recognition of his substantial contribution to Christian gospel music, Bill Gaither is the recipient of many awards and honors. Bill and Gloria both received the title of Christian Songwriter of the Century by the American Society of Composers and Publishers in 2000 because of their impact on American culture.
Gaither has won five Grammy awards and more than a dozen Grammy nominations. The Gospel Music Association gave him more than two dozen Dove Awards and the title of Songwriter of the Year eight times. Even more outstanding was that his album Alleluia: A Praise Gathering for Believers became the first ever Christian album certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
In the Gaither Homecoming series, 78 videos went on to earn gold, platinum or multi-platinum status. A dozen of those videos reached No. 1 on the Billboard video-sales charts.
In 2010, the Indiana Wesleyan University Society of World Changers inducted both Bill and Gloria into their ranks, recognizing them as some of those who serve as the salt and light of their generation.
Fans picking up Bill Gaither tickets might also enjoy the The Lumineers, who play shows with U2 on their Joshua Tree Tour, or the gospel sensation Ernie Haase.
