Originally formed in 1986, Big Head Todd and the Monsters began as a trio that had attended Columbine High School together and then went to the University of Colorado. They began amassing a loyal following by playing in clubs in Boulder, Fort Worth and Denver, getting around in a van they called The Colonel, driving it so much that they put over 400,000 miles on it. During this time, they developed a large following. They have had five songs reach the Top 40 on the US Mainstream Rock charts, and one song reached the Top 40 on the US Modern Rock charts. The 1994 film
Blown Away
featured Big Head Todd and the Monster's song In the Morning and they also contributed a song called Tangerine to the
Led Zepplin
tribute album,
Encomuim: A Tribute to Led Zepplin
, released in 1995.
''Big Head Todd and the Monsters takes an interesting approach to their music. While many bands are concerned with creating songs that can make it on the charts, Big Head Todd and the Monsters are concerned about creating a live experience with their music that fans will want to see again and again. This is because they decided that trying to make songs for the sake of popularity was hit or miss, but cultivating loyal fans would always pay off. Since their biggest hits are over 20 years old, this approach to their music explains why they still sell out concerts. Big Head Todd and the Monsters take their fans seriously and work hard to listen to what the fans want, and to deliver on that. This approach must be working well because the fans are still loving it live.'

'One of the unique things that Big Head Todd and the Monsters does is check social media before their concerts to see what songs people who are planning to attend want to hear. They often pick parts of their setlist based on this information. They are always sure to play favorites, such as Bittersweet, Broken Hearted Savior and Resignation Superman.'

'Since Big Head Todd and the Monsters began as a blues band, they wanted to follow in the footsteps of older blues bands who had silly names. They came up with Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and it stuck.'
