'Bernadette Peters' history'

'

Born in New York in 1948, Bernadette Peters appeared on several TV shows as a child and made her New York stage debut at the age of 10 in the show The Most Happy Fella. She first performed on Broadway in the 1967 production of Johnny No-Trump, but it was a role in the off-Broadway musical Dames at Sea the following year that first earned her acclaim by the theatre community. She was nominated for her first Drama Desk Award, and soon she was being offered starring roles in Broadway shows, such as La Strada and On The Town. The latter earned Peters her first Tony Award nomination, however, it was her performance as Mabel in Mack and Mabel that is credited for truly making her a Broadway star.

Following her success in musical theatre, Peters moved into film and TV acting, appearing in Silent Movie with Mel Brooks, The Jerk with Steve Martin and the big screen adaptation of Annie, among others. Returning to theatre as a big name star in the early '80s, she played lead roles in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance and the new musicals Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods. At around the same time, Peters launched her music career, releasing her debut, self-titled album in 1980. She was compared to Bette Midler and described as a first-rate pop torch singer by Rolling Stone, and had a Billboard top 40 hit with the single Gee Whiz.

As a recording artist, Peters has worked with many great songwriters and producers. She has released songs composed by Lesley Gore, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. She also appears on the cast recordings of many of the shows in which she has performed, four of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards. Peters first played a concert as a solo artist in New York in 1996, and since then has been able to perform at many prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Royal Festival Hall in London.
