Ben Harper
Born Benjamin Chase Harper in Claremont, Calif., Ben Harper is a multidisciplinary musician, singer-songwriter and activist. Harper's genre-defying sound is a one-of-a-kind mix of rock, blues, jazz, funk, folk and reggae. The singer's distinctive voice is both raspy and melodious. Harper is also a guitar and slide guitar player, piano player and keyboardist, drummer, percussionist and bass player. Although he had been gigging since age 12, Harper's official start was in 1992 when he released a limited edition album with folk musician Tom Fruend entitled
Pleasure and Pain
. The artist soon signed with Virgin Records and promptly released his freshman album,
Welcome to the Cruel World
, in 1994. The album was well received both locally and abroad. Harper's second album,
Fight for Your Mind
, exploded across college campuses in 1995, gaining the artist a nearly cult-like following. Since then, he has gone on to release 11 more albums, tour internationally and locally and become an advocate for global social justice.
Ben Harper's socially conscious lyrics reflect the artist's commitment to social and political activism. Ben Harper publicly supports a number of non-profit agencies, including but not limited to Newlight, an Indian organization dedicated to helping children transition from prostitution into healthier lifestyles, the Tony Hawk Foundation, which funds the creation of public skateparks in economically disenfranchised areas, LIFT, Feeding America, the Pat Tillman Foundation, Surfrider, Pick Up America and the Plastic Pollution Coalition as well as Living Lands and Waters.

Ben Harper is an accomplished multidisciplinary musician. He's also a member of more than one other band. Singers Harper, Dhani Harrison and Joseph Arthur are an acoustic rock group named Fistful of Mercy. Their sole album,
As I Call You Down
, peaked at No. 15 on
Billboard's
Top Rock Albums chart. Harper is also the lead singer and guitarist for Relentless7, along with guitarist Jason Mozersky, Bassist Jesse Ingalls and drummer Jordan Richardson. Their album

Billboard
Hot 200. His current band is called Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, and he also has released albums as the folk rock duo Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite. At one point in his career, Harper even toured with The Blind Boys of Alabama.
Ben Harper's signature sound comes from a variety of musical influences. Because his grandparents ran a music store, the Calif. native grew up listening to classic blues, rock and soul music, but he was also influenced by alternative rock bands like Phish and Blues Traveler. Harper also has strong reggae undertones in his music, which makes sense because the singer has often spoken about seeing Bob Marley in concert as being a pivotal experience for him.
