About Asia

The rock band Asia is a super group formed in 1981 by John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, and Carl Palmer, all of whom had previously been in popular rock bands like Yes, King Crimson, the Buggles, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Asia released their self-titled debut album in 1982, which featured one of their classic hit songs, Heat of the Moment. The album reached the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, and it would later become the Billboard #1 Album of the Year for 1982. It has since sold millions of copies worldwide, and it spawned more hit songs like Only Time Will Tell, Here Comes the Feeling, and Wildest Dreams.

Following up on their massive debut, Asia released their second studio album, Alpha, which featured a more mainstream sound and peaked at the number 6 position on the Billboard 200 chart, launching popular singles like Don't Cry, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, The Heat Goes On, and True Colors. With their fresh, new sound, Asia's Alpha went on to achieve platinum status by October of 1983. Asia returned in 1985 with their third studio album, Astra. The album went on to produce popular songs like Go and Too Late, which reached the number 7 and number 30 positions on the US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Asia subsequently experienced a few lineup changes, but they continued to release a number of additional records, including Aqua, Aria, Arena, Rare, Aura, Silent Nation, and Phoenix. The band's 2008 record, Phoenix, was highly anticipated prior to its release because it was the first album to include the original lineup since the release of Alpha back in 1983. The album was met with praise by longtime fans, and it entered the Billboard 200 chart at the number 73 position, which marked the first time the band had a studio album appear on the Billboard 200 since the height of their popularity during the 80s. After their triumphant return with Phoenix, Asia went on to also release Omega in 2010 and XXX in 2012.

Asia's Breakthrough Album

The rock band Asia brought together the talents of John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, and Carl Palmer, and they burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album in 1982. The album was an instant hit, and they subsequently embarked on a tour of sold-out dates. The album would go on to score the band a Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best New Artist, and it was also the Billboard #1 Album of the Year. Thanks to MTV and various rock radio stations around the country, the band also received heavy airplay, which also increased their popularity during this time. After playing packed arenas and sold-out shows, Asia returned to the studio and released their next album, Alpha, which offered fans a more mainstream pop/rock sound. The album was likewise a success, and it was eventually certified platinum. Throughout the years that followed, Asia continued to release a number of records despite lineup changes, and they made their return to the mainstream with their highly anticipated album, Phoenix.

Asia Trivia

What was the original name for Asia's album, Astra?

Asia had initially planned to title the album, Arcadia, but at the time, Duran Duran had a side project that used the same name, so the band decided to change the name in order to avoid confusion with the two.
