While America is a US rock band, it was formed in London in 1970 by Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell, who were all sons of US Air Force personnel stationed there at the time. America is known for an acoustic folk-rock sound and amazing vocal harmonies. Its debut album,
America
, hit No. 1 on the
Billboard
Hot 100, and it has had a total of four Top 10 albums, with five of its albums being certified either gold or platinum in the US. It has won several awards, including the 1972 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. It was nominated for the 1973 Grammy Awards Best Pop Vocal Group in 2006, and it was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2012. It received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012 too, cementing its impact on the music world.
America has had a career spanning more than four decades and has brought fans unique sound and some amazing hits along the way. It is little wonder that many more modern bands were influenced by the music of America. Quite by accident, the band members ended up creating an idea for a record where they made music with younger artists who had been inspired by their music. Gerry Beckley had begun to correspond with Adam Schlesinger from
Fountains of Wayne
because they both admired each other's work. They recorded some tracks together, and that caught the attention of Burgundy Records, who suggested America pair with other independent artists. Some of the other artists America paired with include
Ryan Adams
, members from
Nada Surf
and
My Morning Jacket
,
Ben Kweller
and
Stephen Bishop
. This album, called
Here & Now
, did well, peaking at No. 56 on the
Billboard
Hot 100.

America's performances usually last for an hour to an hour and a half.
America has upcoming tour dates in Biloxi, Miss.; Morristown, N. J.; and Richmond, Ky.
America likes to throw in a few covers of the band members' favorite songs, such as Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles and California Dreamin' by The Mamas and the Papas. It also performs its own hits, such as Ventura Highway, You Can Do Magic, Only In Your Heart, Don't Cross the River and I Need You. It typically saves its best-known hit, A Horse With No Name, for its encore performance.
America has only ever had three group members, all of whom performed lead and backing vocals as needed. They were Gerry Buckley, who plays keyboards and guitar, Dewey Bunnell, who plays guitars and percussion, and Dan Peek, who left the band in 1977 and played guitar and bass guitar. Rumors of a reunion between the three have surfaced throughout the years but were put to rest when Peek passed away in 2011.
Because America got its start in London, Buckley, Bunnell and Peek didn't want people to think that they were a British band trying to sound American, so they named themselves America.
