The Alan Parson Project started in the '70s when Alan Parsons was working at Abbey Road Studios. Parson's career at that point included being the assistant sound engineer for the Beatles Abbey Road album in 1969 and for the classic album Let it Be in 1970. Just after finishing his work as the lead engineer for the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon, Parsons met Eric Woolfson. This was during summertime in 1974. Woolfson was a talented songwriter and pianist. First, he became the manager for Parsons. Then, they explored writing and recording songs together. That led to them co-producing 11 studio albums as The Alan Parsons Project during the 15 years from 1975 to 1990. The concept was to make the album producer famous in a similar way that a film director becomes famous as an auteur of classic films. To record the songs, they hired as many talented musicians as needed for each album. The concept was very successful. The Alan Parsons Project sold more than 50 million albums. The biggest hit was Eye in the Sky, which reached No. 3 on Billboard's Top 10 during October 1982. In 1990, Woolfson felt the need to expand his creative efforts. He went off on his own to write and produce musicals. Sadly, Woolfson died in December 2009 from kidney cancer. Parsons continues his successful music career with The Alan Parsons Live Project that is currently on tour.
