The Alamo Bowl joined the college bowl crowd in 1993. Each year, the Alamo Bowl committee chooses one team from the Big 12 Conference and one team from the Pacific-12 Conference to battle it out on the gridiron in late December. Previous conference tie-ins have included the Big Ten and defunct Southwest Conference. Some of college football's best players have played in the Alamo Bowl throughout its storied history. Examples include Drew Brees, Ted Ginn Jr. and LaVar Arrington. Each year, approximately 60,000 college football fans go to the Alamo Dome in San Antonio to experience the electricity of a legendary college football bowl game. Most Alamo Bowl games feature a matchup between two top-25 teams. To be a part of the excitement, grab your Alamo Bowl tickets at StubHub.
The Alamo Bowl is typically played in late December. However, it was played in January following the 2009, 2014 and 2015 seasons. It is typically the last bowl on the day it is played, usually in a prime-time spot.
There have been many legendary Alamo Bowl games. The 2002 game between the
Colorado Buffaloes
and the Wisconsin Badgers was the first Alamo Bowl to go into overtime. In that contest, the unranked Wisconsin team came away with the win. The 2005 game ended with one of the most unbelievable endings in post-season bowl history. The Michigan Wolverines prematurely celebrated what they thought was a surefire game-winning touchdown. However, the celebration prevented them from getting into the end zone, which caused them to lose the game to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Throughout its history, the Alamo Bowl has averaged approximately 59,000 fans in attendance. It sold out in 1995, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2011. Its record attendance came for the 2007 matchup between Penn State and Texas A&M when 66,166 people witnessed the Nittany Lions come away victorious for their second Alamo Bowl championship. The lowest attendance was the second Alamo Bowl in 1994 when 44,000 people attended. The attendance has not dipped below 50,000 since then.
The Alamo Bowl is one of San Antonio's most beloved traditions. Each year, the famed San Antonio River Walk buzzes with an electric excitement for the Alamo Bowl. There are events throughout the entire city, and both teams usually have pep rallies before the game. Fans are given a chance to meet and interact with the players, and the Fan Zone experience gives them memories that will last throughout their lives. There are many options for accommodations, including the Marriott River Walk as well as countless restaurants. The City of San Antonio does everything it can to support the Alamo Bowl each year.
