The Akron Zips football team began in 1891. During this time, The University of Akron was still called Buchtel College. The college officially became The University of Akron in 1913. The college's athletic teams were all called “ ”Zippers“ ” as a nod to a particular brand and type of rubber boots that were popular at the time. The Zips played as part of a small college school until 1973. After this, the team was awarded Division II status. After spending a few years there, the Zips became a Division I-AA team in 1980 and was the first team to move to Division I-A. At the start of the 1893 season, the school hired the legendary John Heisman — of the Heisman Trophy — to coach both the football and baseball teams. A single-game season against the
Ohio State Buckeyes
led to the Zips' first undefeated season under Heisman. More than 20 coaches since Heisman have worked to refine the Zips into the team it is today. Grab your Akron Zips football tickets at StubHub.

InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field
is the place the Akron Zips call home. The location is only about a decade old, being a new addition to the 2009 football season at the university. The opening game at the stadium against the
Morgan State Bears
was a sold-out event. The venue proper can hold 27,000 sports fans, and there is room for an additional 3,000 spectators at the south end.
The Akron Zips is part of the
Mid-American Conference
. The team has been a member of the MAC since 1992. The team won the Mid-American Conference in 2005.
The
Kent State Golden Flashes
are the biggest rivals to the Akron Zips in the Mid-American Conference. The campus of Kent State is just 10 miles away from Akron University. The schools met on the field in 1923 for the first time and have battled against one another for more than 50 matches since. For the first 12 meetings in the series, Akron defeated Kent State 11 times and ended one match in a tie. After the competition took a brief hiatus, the tables turned on Akron. The Golden Flashes began a winning streak that would last the next 10 games.
John Arth currently acts as the head coach for the Akron Zips. He has held this position since the end of 2018, making him a relative newcomer to the team. However, he has previous coaching experience under his belt that he can use as the Zips enter the 2019 season. He was the head coach at
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
for two years. He also has experience on the field as a quarterback for various football teams.
2018 was the final year that Terry Bowden served as the head coach for the Zips. The team closed out the season with 4–8 and a MAC score of 2–6.
